Poor needle retention but is slightly better than the Traditional Norway Spruce
The natural growth of this tree is to be tall narrow and elegant but in spite of its popularity in many parts of Europe there is only a limited demand for this species in Britain. It responds quite well to shearing but its branches tend to be less strong than Norway spruce. It was once regarded in some areas as being better for holding its needles than Norway spruce but only marginally and now customers prefer the specifically non drop varieties. Its natural range is restricted to a very narrow region around the Drina valley in the Tara Mountains of Serbia.
