Scots pine
Pinus sylvestris

For: Great shape with stout branches for heavy decorations

Against: Not everyones idea of a classic Christmas tree shape

We grow Scots pine along with Austrian pine and Lodgepole pine because of their unrivalled ability to hold their needles and colour throughout Christmas and New Year and way beyond into late spring. In fact we give an unconditional guarantee to customers that they will not drop their needles!

These pines have always been the traditional Christmas tree in areas to the north of us and because of their needle holding people now buy them over a wider area although many people prefer the fir or spruce shape. They adapt well to any site but hard earned experience has taught us to restrict this species to their ideal site as they can be damaged by insects and diseases that can only be controlled by means that are either unacceptable or ineffective.

Another problem is that on all sites the needlecast fungii Lophodermium seditiosum kills the previous year's needles just in time for Christmas. This means that the grower must rely on a good covering of this year's needles and therefore must use all his skill to create a bushy tree that is not too wide or have spaces visible between branches.

Once regarded as a cheap and easy tree to grow it is now our most costly but its superior needle holding makes it worthwhile. Pines are native to a wide range of regions throughout the world with Scots pine and Caledonian pine being native to the British Isle.
