Noble fir
Abies procera

For: Good needle retention

Against: A good quality tree in this species is very hard to find and will always be so

When Noble fir grows as it should it lives up to its name with attractive blue green foliage on strong open spaced horizontal branches that hold decorations well. Many growers however have found to their cost that unless they are on exactly the right site, ideally in a high rainfall area and well protected from deer these trees will fall well short of being noble or even saleable!

They have a beautiful smell and hold their needles well however once they have been in the house and start to dry out they have a very pungent smell that some people find unpleasant.

Native to the forests of Oregon and Washington they can produce very good quality timber and can grow to a great height. They produce large and attractive cones but frustratingly will disintegrate.

Best Christmas tree seed source is collected as 'Welsh Blue'.
