Not everyones idea of a classic Christmas tree shape
Like the Scots pine this tree will hold it's needles till way after Christmas. It is similar in appearance too except that it's needles are green and they give off a very pleasant smell best described as a spicy orange.Until the 1980's this species was planted in the uplands of Britain as a 'pioneer' species due to it's extreme hardiness when planted out on exposed sites of high elevation. A combination of devastating attack by Pine beauty moth and other environmental factors prevented the new planting of this species in the Uplands and this meant that lodgepole pine was no longer to be used for afforestation. By then early thinnings from these plantations found a ready market as a Christmas tree and we now grow this species as an alternative to Scots pine.It originates from North West America and the common name - Lodgepole pine - comes from it's use by the indigenous Indian population who used it for 'Tee-pee' or 'Lodges' support since the trees grow with very straight stems. These trees respond erratically to shearing and pruning so cultivation technique is confined to planting and selling only those trees that are naturally bushy. This means that tree seed must be from the most suitable provenance and Alaskan seed sources have proved to be the best.
