Fraser fir
Abies fraseri

For: Attractive tree with easy to decorate stout branches with good needle retention

Against: Has proven to be a difficult tree to get into a balanced shape and requires pruning and shearing right from when the tree is still small

A newcomer to Britain this is one of the most popular Christmas trees in America with an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest Christmas tree ever erected at a stunning 150 feet tall in a Seattle Shopping area.

It's attractive foliage, rich aroma and with needle holding at least as good as Nordmann fir and possibly better this is going to be equally popular over here. It needs a good fertile soil but like Norway spruce it responds well to shearing and pruning however this must be started early in it's rotation to avoid the unsightly gaps which has hitherto characterised this tree's appearance on the British market. Quality will increase as we learn more about how to treat this species and we may well see Fraser fir challenge Nordmann for most popular tree.

Seed is collected from Roane Mountain which is part of its natural range in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Virginia USA. These mountain forests are almost entirely comprised of this beautiful species. It easily regenerates itself naturally but is under threat as global warming allows Balsam Woolly Adelgid to colonise and kill trees which hitherto grew at altitudes where temperatures were too low. To ensure future supplies seed orchards are being established on suitable sites in the USA. In addition by adopting a policy of allowing this prolific seed bearing species to naturally regenerate it is hoped that in-bred resistance to adelgid attack will occur through natural selection.
