Not particularly good at needle holding which is a pity because this is a most strikingly beautiful tree so much so that there continues to be a demand albeit a limited one.It grows well on our neutral to alkaline soils and tolerates our driest sites being native to such areas as Santa Fe in America. One grower in America claims that these trees are best cut from his plantations on a sunny day in September in order to ensure good needle holding. A theory we have not yet put to the test!
